World Of Warships New Carrier Game Play : It’s fun, and it’s bad.

Post Views: 1,437 Game Balance Vs Fun Balance For Everyone is Hard So I’ve been playing the heck out of Wargaming’s (https://na.wargaming.net) recently revamped game-play mechanic for aircraft carriers in their World of Warships (https://worldofwarships.com) game. I played 8 games in “Co-Op” mode, and then went to “Random Battles” using the Tier-4 “IJN Hosho”. It was a heck of a lot of fun and much more accessible to me as a player than the previous “WoWs As StarCraft” system had been.  However, something was … off. Specifically, my damage.  I was struggling to break 10k damage.  This is a relatively trivial target number, incidentally.  A single citadel strike from a battleship or a couple of torpedo hits from a destroyer will yield that kind of result.  With much…

First Impression – Dovetail Games’ “Flight Sim World”

Post Views: 2,004 As most flight sim enthusiasts are aware, Dovetail Games released their latest simulation product to Steam ™ early-access, today at 12-noon EDT. This product was, of course, “Flight Sim World” (FSW). It was $27.99 CAD, and weighs in at a reasonable 15Gb. I spent the afternoon and early evening live-streaming my experience with it. I would love to share a few of my first impressions with everyone. To start, I’d like to reference Dovetail Games’ commentary on their Steam ™ page for FSW: Why Early Access? “The current flight sim space is a fountain of experience and expertise, and Early Access is our way of drawing upon that knowledge to make Flight Sim World the best it can be. We will have a better, stronger…

Late to the Train Fever Party

Post Views: 876 Late to the Train Fever Party With a name like Train Fever you’d think this is a game about building giant virtual train sets under the restrictions of meta-economy. You’d be wrong; so was I. Train Fever, in fact is a ground transportation management simulator. The simulation component is a bit counterintuitive, and if what you’re here for is to build a model railroad, it’ll bite you as it did me. If I have a primary complaint about Train Fever, it is that for a game that is still $40 CAD a year after its release, the help / tutorial is functionally non-existent. For an early release game, that’s OK … for a “sim” game priced at the bottom edge of Triple A pricing a…

Game System Review – Storium

Post Views: 762 What’s This About Storium? Good question, and I’m afraid the answer isn’t too terribly short. If you are used to “play by email” (PBEM) role-playing games (RPGs), or are used to doing collaborative writing with one or two other authors, then Storium will be very familiar. On the other hand, if you are used to Collectable Card Game systems (CCGs) where you have cards with abilities that you play to defeat and / or neutralize an opponent, then Storium will also feel a bit familiar. The problem is that’s its sort of both of those things at once, but not really either of them. There is a Narrator, who is sort of — but not really — the “Game Master” for those familiar with RPGs.…

Game Review: Blizzard Entertainment’s “Heroes Of the Storm”

Post Views: 784 Game Review: Blizzard Entertainment’s “Heroes Of the Storm” Guest Post by Jean-Michel Vaillancourt I’ve been playing Heroes of The Storm for the past week and I’ve been enjoying every minute of it. It’s already a part of my daily routine to get up in the morning, have breakfast, and play a couple rounds of Heroes Of The Storm (Commonly abbreviated as HOTS). I’m also an ex-League of Legends (also known as LoL ) player, having played solo queue, duo queue, and a full team — both with and without Skype — for about two years before I quit. However, in spite of enjoying that game, never once in two years was it really part of my daily routine. It was more of a game I…
